Identify a competent company.

o Evaluate management and staff experience
o Confirm membership in local and national associations
o Ask if there is an attorney on staff
o Ask how long they have been in business
o Check membership associations for complaints
o Ask for references
o Evaluate server selection process
o Find out in what locations they serve
o Evaluate their financial soundness
o Review their website
o Determine their volume capacity

Conduct a risk assessment.

o Obtain a copy of their Worker’s Compensation policy
o Find out about their sensitive document / shredding policy
o Ask about their field sheet and affidavit archiving policy
o Find out about their internal quality control procedures

Ask about their communication methods.

o Obtain hours of operations and after hours availability
o Ask who will be your point of contact
o Ask about how you will be updated on service progress
o Obtain details on affidavit preparation and approval

Do a rate and service comparison.

o Ask if they offer routine, rush and same-day service with costs and terms
o Ask when the first attempt will be made
o Ask how often they will attempt service
o Ask how many attempts they will make
o Ask if there is a mileage or pick up fee
o Ask if there is a cost to notarize the affidavit
o Ask about success rates
o Ask about their average time-to-serve
o Ask how they handle evasion of service
o Ask if they provide sit-and-wait service
